Richard Butcher is recognised as a hard working leading junior praised for his good judgment and unflappable nature in court. He has been described as well mannered and approachable, with a great ability to assimilate information quickly and make the right decisions accordingly.

He has built up a large and varied practice across the whole spectrum of criminal work but in response to demand for his skills  has for the last 10 years concentrated  on defending those who fall foul of regulatory investigations. These have recently included:

Money Laundering investigations

VAT investigations (including MTIC and “carousel” cases)

Inland Revenue Investigations

Insider Dealing and Fraudulent Trading investigations.

To this end Richard is experienced in advising on all aspects of an investigation from pre-charge restraint orders to confiscation proceedings. If criminal charges do ensue then he is a fearless jury advocate recognising that the greatest ability a defence advocate has is the ability to talk “to” a jury and not just “at” a jury. There is a distinction and that difference can often sway a case in his favour.

Prior to this he was a determined  and skillful prosecutor for the CPS, the DWP and HM Customs and Excise, involved in some of the largest and most complicated investigations.  As he himself puts it “ I am sometimes asked how I can defend people against a background of once being involved in serious prosecution work? My answer is that in my opinion it is essential for any defence advocate to have  that  experience – it provides balance, an insight into the mind of your opponent, and  a knowledge of how the system works”.
