Clare Ashcroft, Catherine Green (Tranters Solicitors) & Anesta Weekes KC Secure Acquittal for Client following 9 Week Murder Trial

Clare Ashcroft, instructed by Catherine Green of Tranters Solicitors and led by Anesta Weekes KC, secured acquittal of their lay client for murder, attempted murder and grievous bodily harm with intent. The lay client was discharged upon verdicts being delivered.

6 defendants stood trial for murder and attempted murder following an incident at the canal basin, Manchester, in August 2023.

The case required meticulous examination and analysis of CCTV and telephone evidence together with the content of body worn video footage.  The principles of joint enterprise emanating from R v Jogee and beyond were the subject of a detailed submission of no case to answer at the conclusion of the Crown’s case.  Although the submission was unsuccessful, it resulted in the Crown making some concessions regarding the evidence against the lay client.   In turn, this supported submissions to the jury that joint enterprise could not be made out upon a very careful analysis of the facts.
