Defendant Receives 23 years’ Imprisonment and £2.6 Million Confiscated

Prosecuting, Tim Storrie KC led Holly Nelson throughout trial, and contested POCA proceedings in a NWROCU prosecution of a defendant, Asim Tufail. The defendant was convicted of three counts of conspiracy to transfer prohibited firearms; two counts of blackmail; two counts of conspiracy to supply cocaine; and the transfer of £32 million of criminal property.

The defendants utilised encrypted mobile telephones in addition to international money laundering to locations including Amsterdam, Dubai and Spain.

In the finding of confiscation, the Judge agreed with the prosecution’s assertion that the defendant had not disclosed all assets, and that this was a ‘hidden assets’ case.

A period of 9 years’ in default was ordered in relation to the POCA proceedings, which if applicable will be served consecutively to the 23 years’ imprisonment.

Other defendants received sentences of:

Junnaid Tufail – 11 years’ imprisonment

Danny Parmar – 9 years’ imprisonment

Peter Lawler – 52 months’ imprisonment
