Alistair Webster KC Secures Acquittal in Major Pharmaceuticals Prosecution

Alistair Webster KC, instructed by Michael Balmer of Weightmans, has just concluded the successful defence of one of the former owners of Medicina Ltd, a major provider of medical products, who had been accused of fraudulently placing medical products onto the market bearing false conformity labels.

After a 9 week trial, Alistair told the jury that the prosecution of his client was seriously misconceived and that it should return a swift verdict in relation to him. The jury found his client not guilty.

Alistair says: “ It is deeply satisfying to bring to an end a period of great anguish for a man who should never, in my view, have been prosecuted. The disgraceful costs rules brought in by a previous government meant that, as a man of substance, he was ineligible for legal aid and could not recover his costs on acquittal. It is high time that this pernicious rule is abolished.
The other defendants were convicted on various counts but that does not justify the prosecution of my client.”
