Thomas Welshman secures guilty verdicts in historic child sex offences prosecution

Thomas Welshman was instructed by CPS East Midlands to prosecuted R v Taylor, a case involving  multiple child sexual offences committed more than 20 years ago. Thomas secured a guilty verdict following a trial in August before HHJ Mooncey in August. The defendant denied the allegations throughout the proceedings but could not provide any explanation as to why the victim would have made the complaints. The historic nature of the offences necessitated careful preparation in terms of opening and closing the case to the jury and the issue of delayed reporting of sexual offences was explored at length during the trial.

The incredible example of bravery shown by the victim throughout the proceedings had been well supported by Thomas, ultimately resulting in a lengthy custodial sentence. The sentence was further accommodated by an indefinite restraining order, which prohibits the defendant from any further contact with the victim.
