Andrew Thomas QC & Austin Welch Secure Acquittal in Food Safety & Hygiene Prosecution

Andrew Thomas Q.C. and Austin Welch have secured the acquittal of Chapman and Sons Limited, a food company in the North East of England, and its two directors on charges under the Food Safety and Hygiene (England) Regulations 2013.

The prosecution arose out of an outbreak of salmonella that occurred in early 2018 in North East England in which, it was alleged, over 20 people were infected and two died. On Wednesday, at Durham Crown Court, the prosecution offered no evidence against all of the defendants and not guilty verdicts were entered.

Andrew represented both of the directors in the case and Austin represented the company. Andrew and Austin were instructed by Mark Brookes and Stephanie Lunt at Clyde and Co LLP.
