Hugh Barton Secures Conviction of Four Serving Merseyside Police Officers

Hugh Barton has successfully prosecuted four serving Merseyside police officers in a trial which concluded yesterday at Liverpool’s Nightingale Court in the Liverpool Hilton. The four were convicted by the jury of Assault Occasioning ABH and Perverting the Course of Justice.

The officers had attended a property in Southport to carry out a welfare check on a suicidal female. The first officer had become angry when the male occupier asked for his collar number and punched him repeatedly to the face and body. Two of the other officers switched off their body worn cameras as the assault was taking place and then tried to conceal the existence of the footage. The four had then fabricated a false version of events in which it was claimed that the victim had assaulted one of the officers.

When adjourning the case for sentence Judge Aubrey QC told all of them that they had brought disgrace to Merseyside Police and undermined the public’s confidence in the police generally.
