John Harrison KC & Nicola Bruce of Olliers Solicitors Secure Favourable Settlement in Civil Forfeiture Case

In March 2023 police officers stopped a car on the M6 in Lancashire. After searching the car they found silver and gold coins, and cash, to a value of nearly £480k.

The police applied for forfeiture pursuant to the Proceeds of Crime Act 2002. They alleged the coins and cash represented money laundering the proceeds of criminal activity.

The Respondent, whose car had been stopped, instructed John Harrison KC and Nicola Bruce to contest the police application.

Together the legal team formed a strategy to present evidence to support the argument that the coins and cash represented the client’s income and life savings over several decades.

The team were successful in settling the case on a favourable basis for the Respondent without the need to participate in a full court hearing.
