KATE BLACKWELL QC SUCCESSFULLY PROSECUTES A MAN CHARGED WITH BEATING TO DEATH A 2 YEAR OLD INFANT

The jury in the trial of Ben Raftery took just one hour to unanimously convict him of murder. He had denied killing Roxie Archer, claiming that she had fallen down the stairs when he had sole care of her. Roxie’s mother had flown to New York with her father to celebrate her 21st birthday. Within hours of her mother leaving, Roxie was rushed to hospital with a severe brain injury and multiple bruising. Upon conviction the defendant was given life imprisonment and told that he must serve at least 18 years before becoming eligible for parole.
