Law Reform Body Discusses Attitudes to Rap

Attitudes to rap, and related musical genres, within the criminal justice system were the subject of discussion last night, in an initiative hosted by justice.org.uk , the law reform charity.

Members of Lincoln House were invited to share ideas with a panel led by Professor Naomi Waltham Smith of Oxford University. It is understood that Justice will report on the topic in due course.

The event took place in Manchester, at the offices of Leigh Day. Tim Storrie KC, Rebecca Filletti, Naomi Duckworth and Lewis Bocking shared experiences of addressing negative assumptions, that had arisen in trial-setttings, about the work of musicians and lyricists in the field. Practitioners continue to deal with the issue, and with related issues that concern freedom of expression among artists and protesters, in criminal litigation.

The role of drill rap had a prominent dimension in the series of trials, in 2022, that concerned the murder of John Soyoye.

Rebecca Filletti was led by Brenda Campbell KC in Trial 1.

Tim Storrie KC with Sarah Magill, acted for Martin Junior Thomas in Trial 2.
