MAN WHO FEATURED IN ’THE DETECTIVES’ LOSES APPEAL

A Rochdale man who attacked a tree surgeon in an horrific axe attack has failed in his attempt to overturn his conviction, in front of the Court of Appeal.

On 18th October 2019 Mohammed Awais Sajid was jailed for 18 years, for an attack on Cameron Brooksbank, by a judge sitting at the Crown Court at Minshull Street.

Sajid’s case was at the heart of a recent BBC documentary, The Detectives, which traced police investigations against an organised crime group in Rochdale.

On 3rd November the Court of Appeal Criminal Division rejected an application to rely on fresh evidence in an appeal against conviction.

A transcript of the judgment is available via the online National Archives.

Tim Storrie KC was instructed to respond to the appeal by the Appeals Unit, Special Crime and Counter Terrorism Division, Crown Prosecution Service.
