Sarah Magill & Lewis Bocking Successfully Prosecute Case Involving Targeted Attacks of Wealthy Lone Women and Businesses
Sarah Magill led Lewis Bocking in the prosecution of three men who organised and took part in targeted attacks of wealthy lone women and businesses.
On 21 February 2024 Greater Manchester Police officers responded to a 999 call made on behalf of a woman who had just been robbed in the car park of John Lewis in Cheadle. The investigation that ensued discovered a tracker had been placed on her car. She had been identified as a target by organised criminals and subjected to highly personal surveillance; her movements monitored for a lengthy period of time in order for them to attack her so they could forcibly remove her £200,000 Patek Philippe watch and diamond wedding ring. On the day of the attack, two of the defendants lay in wait for her in the car park in a stolen replated Mercedes. Having watched her finish her shopping, leave the shop and enter the car park, the defendants put balaclavas on, manoeuvred the car to block her in and then attacked her with a screwdriver as she loaded her shopping into her car.
The police carried out forensic investigative work in respect of that offence and made arrests, during which they obtained the defendants’ phones. On the devices they discovered a catalogue of similar offending which ranged from homes to businesses being targeted. Sarah had already been instructed at this stage of Operation Madford, and was therefore able to structure the prosecutorial approach to the second part of the Operation.
The three men had been tracking and targeting lone, wealthy women and then cornering them when they were most vulnerable and robbing them of their property, which ranged from family heirlooms and wedding rings to expensive watches and jewellery they had bought themselves. All of the victims were traumatised by the offending; some had emigrated from the UK, feeling they could no longer live here safely.
The defendants entered guilty pleas, the final two pleas being entered before the jury on day two of trial. One defendant then unsuccessfully ran a newton hearing in respect of the robbery of a lone woman in her own home, but declined to give evidence.
Sarah and Lewis were comprehensively instructed by the Crown Prosecution Service in Manchester and the officer in the case DC Lucy Williams of Greater Manchester Police. Sarah had been involved in the case since its inception in 2024 and was joined by Lewis in 2026 ahead of the trial. The defendants all received substantial custodial sentences in May 2026.
