A Month Of Success For Anthony Horsfall
A Month of Success for Anthony Horsfall It has been a standout few weeks for Anthony, who has been involved in several significant cases across a range of courts.
In late July, Anthony successfully prosecuted a man for grievous bodily harm at Preston Crown Court. The defendant had carried out a prolonged and persistent attack on a taxi driver, causing very serious injuries. The issue was self-defence. After just 20 minutes of deliberation the jury returned a guilty verdict.
The following week, instructed at the appeal stage by Hannah Youren of Clarkson Hirst Solicitors, Anthony appeared before the Court of Appeal representing an appellant sentenced to 21 years (reduced from 28 years for plea) for a series of historic child sex offences. Anthony’s submissions focused on the principle of totality. The Court reduced the sentence to 15 years.
Shortly afterwards, Anthony secured an acquittal in a voyeurism trial at Manchester Crown Court following a submission of “no case to answer.” His effective cross-examination of the complainant critically undermined key elements of the prosecution’s case. He was instructed by Catherine Green of Tranters Solicitors.
Anthony instructed by Estelle Parkhouse and Ashleigh Halligan, then successfully prosecuted a case on behalf of the Information Commissioner’s Office at Leeds Crown Court. The defendant, a former investigator at the Independent Office for Police Conduct, was convicted of unlawfully handling confidential material concerning the death of a vulnerable person in police custody.
Last week, Anthony secured convictions at Minshull Street Crown Court against a man for assault by penetration and stalking. The defendant had sexually assaulted his former partner in her now home, before then launching a sustained campaign of stalking against her and her children. The case involved complex disclosure issues, which required careful and sensitive handling. Sentencing has been adjourned.
Finally, this week, Anthony instructed by Jane Novas-Morrell at Olliers successful defending a man charged with causing serious injury by careless driving. After a 4-day trial involving expert evidence, the jury returned a not guilty verdict in under an hour. Anthony’s cross-examination of the police forensic collision expert revealed key details that had previously been overlooked.
